Un medio para crear belleza

Sus inicios en la fotografía son los de cualquier otro aficionado: las escenas turísticas que encontramos al salir de viaje. Pero Guillaume Flandre ha evolucionado hasta alcanzar un punto de vista auténtico. Sus fotografías poseen una dupla que multiplica los matices y eleva los significados: fuerza poética y una luz especial. De esta forma, ante nuestros ojos desfilan lugares bellos que nos hacen soñar e imaginar historias.

¿Por qué es importante para ti la fotografía?

Es una pregunta interesante, pero no sé exactamente cuándo se volvió importante para mí. Me atraen las cosas bellas, sea cual sea el medio: arquitectura, pintura, escultura, grafiti, diseño gráfico, lo que sea. Para mí, la fotografía es uno de esos medios que tienen como objetivo crear belleza. Y es el medio que escogí.

Además, es algo que necesito como equilibrio en mi vida. También tengo un trabajo más analítico, por lo que me viene bien una salida creativa, donde haya menos reglas y las posibilidades sean infinitas.

¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de la fotografía?

Disfruto las fases del proceso: pensar en un concepto o un lugar; tener que hacer realidad la idea fotográfica físicamente, ya sea en un estudio o en el exterior; luego está el proceso de edición, la selección y el empaquetado de la fotografía en una serie más amplia.

Me encanta la incertidumbre que conlleva este proceso. Un concepto dado podría terminar produciendo resultados totalmente diferentes dependiendo, no sólo del artista, sino también del contexto (clima, transeúntes, luz, estado de ánimo). Creo que es esta incógnita la que aporta miedo y emoción.

En tu caso, viajar significa…

Para mí, viajar es una cuestión de curiosidad y de salir de la propia burbuja. Consciente o inconscientemente te convierte en una persona más completa que puede empatizar con diferentes puntos de vista. Pero de una forma más terrenal, también se trata de disfrutar de la vida, un paréntesis en el día a día que te permite desconectar y conocer nuevos lugares y su gastromía.

¿Cuál es tu momento favorito para tomar fotografías?

Tiene que ver con la luz. El mejor momento es probablemente al final del día, cuando la luz genera sombras alargadas. Creo que ese instante tiene mucho potencial para capturar grandes imágenes.

¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito o el lugar que más te ha sorprendido? ¿Qué lugar te gustaría fotografiar?

Sé que es una respuesta aburrida, pero me encanta fotografiar la ciudad de Nueva York. En parte es nostalgia, ya que estuve un tiempo viviendo allí. Pero también tiene que ver con lo que sucede allí, algo grandioso, personajes interesantes y una luz asombrosa. De todas formas, nunca es sólo el lugar lo que me sorprende, sino también el contexto. Estar allí en el momento adecuado. Hace poco estuve en Marsella, Francia, y sólo llevaba encima una lente de 56mm que casi nunca uso para trabajos de fotografía callejera. Sin embargo, pude tomar algunas imágenes geniales, lo que me sorprendió, ya que no esperaba mucho de ese viaje en relación a la fotografía.

También estoy muy emocionado de viajar a la India por primera vez a finales de este año. Llevo tiempo queriendo ir porque parece un lugar muy diferente a cualquier otro que haya visitado. Tengo muchas ganas de descubrir qué fotografías voy ser capaz de tomar allí. Aunque también siento un poco de presión, ya que muchos grandes fotógrafos han realizado trabajos excepcionales en la India.

¿Qué elemento dirías que nunca debe faltar en tus fotografías?

Un punto de vista único. Es fácil caer en la trampa de reproducir el estilo de los demás. Pero no hay que ser perezoso, hay que intentar dar con una perspectiva que te guste. Ahí es donde está la diversión.

¿Qué cámara sueles utilizar?

He estado usando una Fujifilm X-T2 por un tiempo, con dos de mis lentes favoritas: 23mm f1.4 y 56mm f1.2. Dicho esto, también uso mucho la cámara de mi iPhone para fotografías más informales.

¿Cómo te mantienes creativo? ¿Cuáles son tus principales fuentes de inspiración?

Utilizo mucho Instagram para inspirarme. Siempre estoy buscando artistas con nuevas perspectivas a los que seguir. Sin embargo, Twitter ha sido mi mejor herramienta para descubrir nuevos artistas recientemente. Además, también trato de ir a exposiciones y ferias de fotografía (London Photo, por ejemplo). Creo que las imágenes impresas a gran tamaño impactan de manera diferente.

Además de la fotografía, ¿qué otras actividades te interesan?

También soy ingeniero de software, por lo que la tecnología es algo que disfruto mucho. La intersección del arte y la tecnología es un espacio muy interesante últimamente, con la inteligencia artificial jugando un papel cada vez más importante. Es un nuevo camino que me resulta fascinante.

Si fantaseamos un poco… ¿Qué lugar imaginario (del cine, la literatura o la pintura) te gustaría visitar para fotografiarlo?

Me encantaría ver el Tesseract de Interstellar, ese espacio de cuatro dimensiones donde el tiempo también se puede explorar con total libertad. Visualmente es impresionante y hermoso, pero también me permitiría retroceder en el tiempo y fotografiar grandes momentos históricos, de manera que nunca más me perdería ese instante decisivo por una fracción de segundo… ¡Sería un sueño!

His beginnings in photography are those of any other amateur: the tourist scenes that we find when going on a trip. But Guillaume Flandre has evolved to an authentic point of view. His photographs have a pair that multiplies the nuances and elevates the meanings: poetic force and a special light. In this way, beautiful places display before our eyes that make us dream and imagine stories.

Why is photography important to you?

It’s an interesting question, I don’t know exactly when it became important to me. I’m attracted to beautiful things, whatever the medium: architecture, paintings, sculpture, graffiti, graphic design, you name it. To me photography is one of these mediums that aim to create the beautiful. It happens to be the medium that was the best match to me.

It’s something I need as a balance in my life. I also have a more analytical job, so I need a creative outlet, where there are fewer rules and possibilities are endless.

What do you enjoy the most about photography?

I enjoy the phases of it: thinking about a concept or a place, then having to physically make the art a reality, producing it either in a studio or out in the world, then the editing process and the selection and packaging of the photo into a wider series.

I love the uncertainty of it. A given concept could end up resulting in totally different outcomes depending not just on the artist but also the context (weather, passerbys, light, mood.). It’s this unknown that is both scary and exciting.

For you, traveling means…

To me, traveling is about curiosity and getting out of one’s bubble. It’s consciously or unconsciously making you a more rounded person who can empathise with different points of view. But in a more down to earth way, it’s also about enjoying life, a parenthesis in the day to day life where you can enjoy new, beautiful places and food, and relax.

What is your favorite season (or time of day) to shoot?

It’s all about light. The best time is probably when that light at the end of the day produces long shadows. There’s a lot of potential for great images then.

Which is your favorite place or the place that most surprised you? What place would you like to photograph?

It’s going to be a boring answer but I absolutely love photographing New York City. It’s partly nostalgia as I used to live there. It’s also that there’s always something great happening, some interesting characters and an amazing light. It’s never just a place that surprises me but also the context. Being there at the right time. I was recently in Marseille, France and only brought a 56mm lens which I almost never use for street photography work. Yet I was able to shoot some great images, which surprised me as I wasn’t expecting much from that trip photo-wise.

I’m very excited to travel to India for the first time later this year. I’ve been meaning to go for years because it seems so different from all the places I’ve been to so far. I can’t wait to see what photos I’ll shoot over there. There’s also a little bit of pressure as so many great photographers made exceptional bodies of work in India.

What element would you say should never be missing in your photographs?

Your unique point of view. It’s easy to fall in the trap of reproducing everyone else’s style or point of view of a scene. Don’t be lazy and try to find a unique perspective that you enjoy. That’s where the fun is.

What kind of camera do you usually use?

I’ve been using a Fujfilm X-T2 camera for a while, with two of my favorite lenses: 23mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.2. That being said, I also use my iPhone camera a lot for more casual photography.

How do you stay creative? What are your main sources of inspiration for your work?

I use Instagram a lot for inspiration, and I’m always on the look out for artists with new perspectives to follow. That being said, interestingly Twitter has been better at making me discover new artists recently. In the real world I also try to go to Photo Fairs (e.g. London Photo) and exhibitions as much as I can. There’s something about seeing work printed large that hits differently.

Besides photography, what other activities are you interested in?

I’m also a software engineer so technology is something I enjoy a lot. The intersection of art and technology is a very interesting space lately, with AI playing a bigger and bigger role, so I find it fascinating to follow.

If we fantasize a little… What imaginary place (from cinema, literature, or painting) would you like to visit to photograph it?

I’d love to see Interstellar’s Tesseract, that 4 dimension space where time can also be explored freely. It visually looks incredibly beautiful, but would also allow me to go back in time and photograph great historical moments, and never again miss that shot by a fraction of a second… The dream!
