Un diario a todo color

Las fotografías favoritas de Jerad Armijo son las tomadas al mediodía. Le encanta ver cómo el sol cambia el paisaje y crea, en ocasiones, sombras increíbles. Aprovecha el color para crear un arte delicado, ligero y de composición equilibrada. A menudo se esfuerza por encontrar escenas de otro mundo, desoladas y surrealistas con colores peculiares que utiliza para expresar el viaje de su vida.

Pero dice Jerad que ser humano es difícil. Por este motivo, su trabajo es un diario visual de lo que para él significa ser humano y así, a través de sus fotografías, espera expresar las dificultades de la vida de una manera elegante que ayude a unirnos en lugar de separarnos.

¿Qué significa para ti tomar fotografías?

Significa el mundo. Nací para crear. Se supone que debo hacerlo, y me siento fantástico cuando creo nuevas obras de arte que superan mis expectativas personales. Amo las artes y eso me llena el corazón.

¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de la fotografía?

Me encantan esos momentos en los que miro una pieza final y digo: “no puedo creer que haya hecho esto”. La sensación de impresionarte a ti mismo y de crecer como artista es muy gratificante. Y, es cierto que puede ser un poco abrumador, pero me hace muy feliz. Es una manera de seguir adelante en la vida, una excelente manera de procesar la vida en esta tierra.

Háblanos de la importancia del color en tu fotografía.

Los colores son lo más importante en mi trabajo. Utilizo mi sinestesia para crear colores delicados en mi fotografía. Escucho música para ver los colores y traduzco los colores que veo de la música en mi fotografía. Me encanta usar contrastes de color para ayudar a equilibrar la tonalidad general de la imagen, mientras la relaciono con la historia de mi vida personal. Me gusta pensar en mi trabajo como un diario visual que utiliza el color.

¿Qué elemento nunca debe faltar en tus fotografías?

Amo el equilibrio. Me encanta equilibrar mis colores, ser delicado, ni mucho ni poco. La mayoría de las veces también me gusta incluir formas para guiar al espectador por la imagen. Y algunas son sutiles mientras que otras resultan muy obvias.

¿Qué lugar es el que más te ha sorprendido?

De todos los lugares en los que he estado, diría que Utah en su conjunto está lleno de sorpresas. Esta ubicación es salvaje, indómita y surrealista.

¿Y qué lugar te gustaría fotografiar?

Los principales lugares que me gustaría fotografiar son Nueva Zelanda, Argentina y la Antártida.

¿Cuáles son tus principales fuentes de inspiración?

Honestamente, me gusta encontrar nuevas inspiraciones todo el tiempo para ayudar a mantener fresca mi fotografía. Dicho esto, me inspiro mucho en artistas como Hayao Miyazaki, Georgia O’keefe, en diferentes músicos para mi sinestesia, otros artistas plásticos, anime y videojuegos de fantasía. Como dije, me gusta estudiar y extraer ideas o  conceptos de otros grandes artistas y traerlos de vuelta a mi trabajo con mi sello personal.

En tu opinión, ¿cuáles son las claves para ser un gran fotógrafo?

Creo que la intención es lo que hace que un buen fotógrafo sea genial. Alguien que desarrolla un estilo distinto, que toma fotografías de manera diferente al resto y que, de forma rutinaria, rompe sus propias reglas para promover su crecimiento como artista.

Además de la fotografía, ¿qué otras actividades te interesan?

Amo jugar a videojuegos. Si no estoy editando o fotografiando, lo más probable es que esté jugando. También me encanta cocinar, pintar, escribir y leer poesía. Me gusta diversificarme hacia diferentes géneros de las artes para encontrar más inspiración para mi propio trabajo personal.

Si hablamos de las pequeñas cosas que te hacen feliz, ¿con cuáles te quedas?

Una buena carcajada, un trozo de chocolate, una buena margarita, mi pareja, mi perro, y la lista puede seguir. Soy muy fácil de complacer. Estoy viviendo la vida al máximo, apreciando cada pequeño momento.

Jerad Armijo’s favorite photographs are mid-day shots. He loves seeing how the sun changes the landscape and sometimes creates amazing shadows. He harnesses color to create delicate, light and compositionally balanced art. He often strives to find otherworldly, desolate, and surreal scenes with peculiar colors which he uses to express his life’s journey.

But Jerad says that being human is difficult. For this reason, his portfolio is a visual diary of what it means to him to be human. Through his photographs, he hopes to express life’s difficulties in an elegant way which will help to bring us together rather than driving us apart.

What does it mean for you to take pictures?

It means the world. I am born to create. I’m supposed to, and it feels fantastic when I do create new pieces of art work that surpass my personal expectations of myself. I love the arts, and it makes my heart full.

What do you enjoy the most about photography?

I love those moments where I look at a final piece and I go “I can’t believe I made this”. The feeling of impressing yourself, and growing as an artist is so fulfilling. It’s a bit overwhelming, and it just makes me so happy to be alive. It’s a way for me to push on through life, a great way to process living on this earth.

Tell us about the importance of colors in your photography.

Colors are of the upmost importance in my work. I use my chromesthesia in order to create delicate colors in my photography. I listen to music, in order to see colors, and translate the colors I see from the music into my photography. I love using color contrasts to help balance the overall tonality of the image, while tying it with a personal life story of mine. I like to think of my work as a visual diary utilizing color.

What element should never be missing in your photographs?

I love balance. I love balancing my colors, to be delicate, and not too much or not too little. Most of the time I also like to include many shapes to lead the viewer around the image. Some are subtle where as some are very obvious.

What place surprised you the most? What place would you like to photograph? Why?

Out of all the places I’ve been to, I would have to say Utah as a whole is full of surprises. This location is wild, untamed, and surreal. Oh god the list could go on about what area I’d like to photograph! My top places I’d like to photograph are New Zealand, Argentina, and Antarctica.

What are your main sources of inspiration for your work?

I honestly like to find new inspirations all the time to help keep my photography fresh. That being said I get a lot of inspiration from artists like Hayao Miyazaki, Georgia O’keefe, musicians for my chromesthesia, other fine artists, anime, and fantasy video games. As I said I like to pull and study from other great artists and bring it back to my work with my twist.

In your opinion, what are the keys to being a great photographer?

I think intent is what makes a good photographer “great”. One who develops a distinct style, photographs differently from the rest, and routinely breaks their own rules to further their growth as an artist.

Besides photography, what other activities are you interested in?

I love to play games. If I’m not editing, or photographing I’m most likely gaming. I also love to cook, paint, write, and read poetry. I like branching out to different genres of the arts in order to find more inspiration for my own personal work.

What are the little things that make you happy?

A good laugh, a piece of chocolate, a good margarita, my partner, my dog, and the list can go on. I’m very easy to please. I’m living life to the fullest and appreciating all the small moments the most.
