Nominada a 6 Oscar, ganó 2 (montaje y decorados color). Obtuvo 1 Globo de oro (dirección) y diversas nominaciones. Producida por Fred Kohlmar, se estrenó el 16-II-1956.
La acción tiene lugar en una pequeña ciudad de Kansas, en 1955, durante 24 horas, desde la mañana del Día del Trabajo a la mañana siguiente. Narra la historia de Hal Carter (William Holden), un aventurero que desea encontrar un trabajo estable. Con este propósito visita a su antiguo compañero de estudios, Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson), hijo de un rico empresario de la localidad. Conoce a Magda Owens (Kim Novak), de 19 años, que trabaja de dependienta en una tienda, es la chica más guapa del lugar y la novia de Benson. El visitante traerá en jaque a su amigo Alan Benson y hechizará a la mayoría de las mujeres de la comunidad.
La película desarrolla una historia de personajes insatisfechos, ubicada en un lugar indefinido, aislado y extraño. Con motivo de la fiesta campestre (“picnic”) del Día del Trabajo en Riverside Park, las pasiones ocultas se desbordan y enfrentan a los personajes con sus debilidades y frustraciones. La sensualidad y el erotismo (torso desnudo de Holden y escotes de Novak) alcanzan su cenit en el baile de ambos al compás de la bonita canción “Moonglow”. El amor de Hal y Magda es fuente de tensiones, conflictos y venganzas. La obra está sembrada de un humor ácido y crítico, con una patina singular de autocensura propia de la época, pero a su vez creadora de rendijas por donde pasa el viento libertario que se desea y no se lucha por obtener.

Gracias a este éxito, a su peculiar celebración de la represión sexual en un cuerpo espectacular, fue la actriz ideal para que Alfred Hitchcock le entregara las dos mujeres en una que enloquecen a James Stewart en su película más importante: Vértigo en 1958, el mismo año en que también brilló en una comedia muy sensual, Me enamoré de una bruja, de Richard Quine, también con James Stewart. Hoy tiene 87 años. Continúa viviendo con su segundo marido, el médico Robert Malloy, con quien se casó en 1976.
Por su parte, William Holden (1918-1981), ya era una primerísima figura en diversidad de géneros. Gran talento que falleció a los 63 años cuando gozaba de una prestigiosa madurez. Algunos títulos memorables: El hombre de Colorado (1949), Nacida ayer (1950), El crepúsculo de los dioses (1950), Sabrina (1954), El puente sobre el Río Kwai (1957), Grupo salvaje (1969), y Fedora (1978), entre muchas otras.
Picnic es la mejor película de Joshua Logan (1908-1988). Un hombre de teatro que apenas filmó diez películas y, la mayoría versiones de obras de teatro, todas insólitas en la gran industria, y ciertamente espléndidas: como Bus Stop (1956), Camelot (1967) y La leyenda de la ciudad sin nombre (1969).
El autor de la obra original, William Inge (1913-1973) recibió en 1953 el Premio Pulitzer por Picnic, máximo galardón para el teatro estadounidense.

Se trata de una película de marcado carácter teatral con un ritmo cinematográfico fantástico; con breves pinceladas y con una magnífica elección y dirección de actores, consigue una identificación inmediata por parte del espectador con algunos de estos personajes. Porque esta es una película, por encima de todo, de personajes y Logan no necesita más. No hay grandes, ni siquiera muy buenos diálogos. Hablan, ríen y lloran como lo haríamos nosotros. Una cercanía muy teatral que, sin embargo, logra acercarse más al espectador por su dominio de los diversos planos de rostros y cuerpos en un año donde éstos se creían intocables para el arte cinematográfico, ahogados por la moral conservadora en el poder establecido mundialmente.
