El día 20 de julio se celebró la llegada del hombre a la luna, y por ello durante apenas cuatro días algunas salas españolas están proyectando la magnífica Apolo 11 de Todd Douglas Miller.
Editada exclusivamente por el director a partir de más de 500 carretes de filme procedentes de 1969, gran parte de él rodado en 70mm por la NASA y digitalizado a lo largo de seis meses, la película constituye una cápsula temporal a través de la cual la audiencia se traslada a los nueve días que duró la misión, comenzando con el transporte del monumental cohete Saturn V a su lugar de lanzamiento, para meternos en la sala de control de la Tierra y en el interior de la nave Columbia y el módulo lunar Eagle, pasando por las afueras de Cabo Cañaveral y vivir en directo el lanzamiento escuchando las retransmisiones radiofónicas y televisivas bajo el calor, la euforia y la expectación de un momento único en la historia de la humanidad.
Como buen documentalista, que a menudo reflexiona sobre el intenso esfuerzo que requiere la investigación, Douglas Miller no solo condensó todo el material visual en un primer corte de 24 horas, sino que buceó en más de 11.000 horas de audios y consultó con las familias de los astronautas, y sobre todo con los protagonistas aún vivos de la misión: Michael Collins y Buzz Aldrin. Ese esmero en la preproducción le ha permitido incluir preciosas e inéditas porciones de metraje y sonido (a cargo de Eric Milano), como los disímiles ritmos cardiacos de los astronautas y el singular punto de vista de Michael Collins.
La película sobre todo subraya la magnitud del logro del alunizaje por una nave tripulada hace cincuenta años al hacer patente que, de entre todas las posibilidades, la de éxito era altamente improbable. Y, en consonancia con lo prodigioso del asunto que trata –el triunfo de una ciencia y técnicas primitivas a hombros de un enorme y complejo equipo humano- la experiencia cinematográfica que ofrece es extraordinaria y abrumadora. Con una calidad fotográfica casi indescriptible, con efectivas animaciones y con imágenes en pantalla dividida, al verla a veces olvidamos probablemente lo más admirable: pese a no tratarse de cine narrativo y constar únicamente de las comunicaciones entre los astronautas y la sala de control, las voces de los periodistas y las imágenes de la gente agolpada en torno al Centro Espacial, la audiencia de hoy revive activamente y con total naturalidad el acontecimiento que está teniendo lugar ante sus ojos.
No cabe duda de que Apolo 11 es una celebración de la trigonometría y de la capacidad de la inteligencia y el ingenio humanos. Pero, ante todo, y de ahí se desprende la irrefrenable emoción que despierta, es un bellísimo viaje en el tiempo.
